It was heartbreak for Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as the young Indian pair crashed out of the Olympics despite winning their last Group ‘A’ game against British pair of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy 21-17, 21-19 in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Three teams — India, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia — won two matches each but on better game average, the Taipei and Indonesian team made it to the quarterfinals from Group ‘A’.
Five minutes before the Indians played the Great Britain team, third seeds Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Taipei stunned world No. 1 pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia 21-18, 15-21, 21-17. Much to the disappointment of the Indians, the match went into three games.
Had the match closed in two games, the Indians could have got a chance of qualifying for the next stage.
Indonesia won five games and lost two, Taipei won five games and lost three while India won four games and lost three. Indonesia will top the group ahead of Taipei.
Despite the loss, the Indians gave a good account of themselves and can leave Tokyo on a high note as they stunned the Taipei team. The latter ousted the world No. 1 team on Monday.
